Sato's Scoring Spree Steals the Show as Wardens Upset Wolves 101-94
Sato Explodes for 31, Wardens Conquer Wolves on Road
CHICAGO – The Washington Wardens delivered a stunning upset on the road, outlasting the Chicago Wolves 101-94 in a tightly contested World Pro League matchup on Tuesday night. In a game defined by offensive firepower from the Wardens and a late surge from the Wolves that ultimately fell short, Kenji Sato proved to be the catalyst, pouring in a game-high 31 points.
The game remained a back-and-forth affair for much of the first half, with neither team able to establish a significant lead. The Wolves struggled with their shooting consistency, particularly from beyond the arc, while the Wardens found their rhythm early, connecting on a barrage of three-pointers.
Key momentum swings defined the second half. A crucial steal by Kenji Sato midway through the third quarter led to a fast-break layup, igniting a Wardens run. Later, Jian Zhao of the Wolves tried to answer with a strong drive, but Oscar Nielsen was there for a key block. Zhao did manage to find his scoring touch, leading the Wolves’ offense with 19 points.
However, Sato remained relentless, his offensive onslaught proving too much to contain. He was supported by Ethan O’Malley’s 15 points and Aisha Bakari’s 11 points and 4 assists. For the Wolves, Julian Santos nearly recorded a triple-double with 14 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 assists, and Jett Alcantara added 11 points and 4 assists, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Wardens’ sharp shooting.
“We knew this was going to be a tough environment, but our guys really stepped up,” said Wardens Head Coach Maria Rodriguez. “Kenji was phenomenal tonight. He carried us when we needed it.”
Wolves forward Jian Zhao acknowledged the Wardens’ performance. “They shot the ball incredibly well, especially from three. We didn’t have an answer for Sato tonight. We have to regroup and play better defense.”
