Vipers Rally Behind Balanced Attack to Tame Samurai 102-91
Vipers Overcome Caldwell's Barrage with Strong Second Half
LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Vipers showcased their depth and resilience Tuesday night, battling back from an early deficit to defeat the Tokyo Samurai 102-91 at Staples Center. A pivotal third-quarter surge, fueled by a balanced offensive output and stifling defense, ultimately sealed the victory for the Vipers in this crucial World Pro League matchup.
The first half saw a back-and-forth affair, with the Samurai’s Rhys Caldwell proving a difficult matchup. Caldwell poured in 22 of his game-high 32 points before halftime, keeping Tokyo within striking distance. However, the Vipers refused to be intimidated.
Los Angeles found their rhythm coming out of the locker room. A barrage of three-pointers, including two from Zara Ali, ignited a 15-4 run that swung the momentum firmly in their favor. The Vipers’ defensive intensity also ramped up, with Léa Roux and Zara Ali anchoring the paint and forcing crucial turnovers.
“We knew Caldwell was capable of a big night, but we didn’t panic,” said Vipers Head Coach Maria Rodriguez. “We focused on our game plan, trusted each other, and the shots started falling. Our energy in the second half made the difference.”
For the Vipers, a committee of scorers stepped up. Kenzo Okada and Zara Ali each contributed 15 points, while Daniel Rojas added 14 points and dished out 5 assists. Emilien Bertrand was a force on the glass, pulling down 10 rebounds.
“It’s about playing together,” commented Rojas after the game. “Tonight, everyone contributed. When we share the ball and play defense like that, we’re a tough team to beat.”
The Samurai fought valiantly, with Cassian Patel adding 10 points and 5 assists. However, their 13 turnovers proved too costly against the Vipers’ relentless pressure.
