ATHENS – The Houston Comets delivered a professional basketball masterclass on Tuesday night, dismantling the Athens Olympians with an explosive offensive performance that saw them secure a resounding 135-84 victory in Pro League action. A relentless display of sharp shooting and cohesive ball movement allowed the Comets to pull away early and never look back, extending their winning streak and making a statement to the rest of the league.
From the opening tip, the Comets established their offensive rhythm. Elias Sorenson was the catalyst, dropping a game-high 28 points and dishing out 4 assists. His early three-pointers, coupled with consistent scoring from Eva Jensen (16 points, 8 rebounds) and Finnian Gallagher (14 points), put the Olympians on their heels. Houston’s ability to share the ball was evident as they racked up 30 assists against just 9 turnovers, with point guard Marcus Thorne orchestrating the offense to perfection with 8 assists and 3 steals.
The Olympians, led by Sophie Lane’s 18 points, struggled to find their footing. Despite efficient scoring from Lane and 12 points from Astrid Jensen, Athens couldn’t match Houston’s blistering pace. Their 33.3% shooting from the field and 61.9% from the free-throw line proved insufficient against the Comets’ suffocating defense.
“We came out with a lot of energy tonight and it showed,” said Comets coach David Miller. “Our guys were locked in defensively and shared the ball exceptionally well. When we play like this, we’re a tough out.”
Sophie Lane acknowledged the challenge. “They really came out firing and we couldn’t get stops consistently,” she stated. “We need to learn from this and regroup before our next game.”
The second half saw Houston continue their relentless attack, extending their lead with a barrage of three-pointers, including multiple from Sorenson and Jensen, and a strong interior presence from Diego Mendez who grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
