Wardens Surge Late: Washington Downs Aces 102-91 After Clutch Fourth Quarter Run
Nielsen Leads Wardens' Resurgence, Aces' Shooting Woes Sink Hopes
LAS VEGAS – The Washington Wardens stormed back in the final frame, outscoring the Las Vegas Aces 32-22 in the fourth quarter to secure a 102-91 victory at the Michelob ULTRA Arena on Saturday night. A crucial 15-2 run in the last seven minutes proved to be the difference, as the Wardens capitalized on a cold spell from the Aces to improve their Pro League standing.
The Aces, led by a strong offensive effort from Ethan Hughes (21 points) and a double-double from Elias Bergstrom (15 points, 9 rebounds), held a slim lead for much of the first half. However, their typically sharp shooting faltered, particularly from beyond the arc, where they connected on just 28.9% of their attempts.
Washington, meanwhile, found their rhythm, particularly in the second half. Oscar Nielsen was a force for the Wardens, pouring in a game-high 16 points and adding 7 rebounds. The team’s ball movement was exceptional, registering a season-high 32 assists.
“We just had a lapse in concentration in the fourth,” said Aces head coach Marcus Bell. “We missed too many easy looks, and they capitalized. It’s a tough one to swallow.”
Key moments saw the Wardens’ defense step up, with multiple blocks from Orion Lopez and Clara Smith stifling Aces drives. Offensively, Aisha Bakari chipped in 11 points, including a crucial three-pointer that sparked the decisive run. Zoe Albright added 15 points and a game-high 6 assists for Washington.
“We knew we had to pick up the intensity on both ends,” stated Wardens guard Oscar Nielsen. “We trusted each other, shared the ball, and started making shots. That’s what this team is capable of.”
The Aces will look to regroup on the road next week, while the Wardens head home with momentum.
