RICHMOND — The Richmond Rapids secured a nail-biting 1-0 victory over the Langley Lions thanks to Dmitri Sokolov’s electrifying breakaway goal late in the game and a stellar performance by goalie Nikolai Petrov. The tight match was defined by resilient defense, key momentum swings, and extraordinary goaltending that kept the Rapids just ahead.
The game opened with high intensity as both teams exchanged shots and hits. Richmond’s Dmitri Sokolov tested Langley netminder Sigrid Magnusson early, including a close save at the start of the game. Langley responded with several offensive pushes, but Petrov stood firm, shutting down scoring attempts by Elif Kaya and Yusuf Kadir among others.
Nia Mwangi was a constant offensive threat for the Rapids, firing 14 shots and creating significant pressure on Langley’s defense. Andrei Markov was relentless for the Lions, dominating the shot count with 15 attempts but could not find a way past Petrov.
The decisive moment came late when Sokolov broke free on a thrilling breakaway, eluding Magnusson to score the only goal of the night. “I just saw an opening and went for it,” said Sokolov. “But honestly, Petrov made the saves that kept us in it all game.”
Petrov’s 28 saves, including critical stops during Langley’s final push, earned him the game’s star honors. “We knew it would be a battle,” said Rapids coach Lena Ortiz. “Nikolai’s composure under pressure was incredible, and that goal by Dmitri was a game-changer.”
The Rapids dominated in shot efficiency despite fewer shots, while Langley’s 48 shots could not translate into goals due to Petrov’s brilliance and some tight defense.
