VANCOUVER – The Vancouver Orcas unleashed a blistering offensive performance to overwhelm the Milan Hawks 117-96 on Tuesday night, extending their winning streak and solidifying their position in the World Pro League standings. After a tight first half, a relentless barrage of three-pointers and assertive drives from Lena Petrov and Cleo Vargas propelled the Orcas to a commanding victory.
The game remained a gritty affair through the first two quarters, with neither team able to establish significant separation. Milan’s Elara Ortega and Léa Moreau kept the Hawks within striking distance with timely baskets, while Leo Braun contributed with his scoring and playmaking. However, the Orcas’ defense, anchored by Griffin Price’s four steals, began to tighten in the second half.
The turning point arrived in the third quarter when Vancouver’s backcourt tandem, Petrov and Vargas, ignited. Petrov poured in 33 points, shooting an efficient 51.6% from beyond the arc, while Vargas added 24 points and a game-high 8 rebounds. Their combined offensive onslaught, coupled with opportunistic steals, created a momentum swing that Milan couldn’t recover from.
“We knew we had to start executing at a higher level,” said Orcas Head Coach David Sterling. “Lena and Cleo were phenomenal tonight, but it was a collective effort. Our defense locked in, and we started sharing the ball unselfishly.”
Milan Hawks’ Elara Ortega led her team with 15 points, but the Hawks struggled to find consistent scoring and fell victim to Vancouver’s suffocating defense in the latter half.
“They just hit us with a wave of offense that we couldn’t answer,” admitted Hawks captain Kwame Nkosi. “We gave it our best, but tonight belonged to Vancouver.”
