Matadors Surge Late, Stifle Lumberjacks 130-114 Behind Finch's Five-Star Effort
Finch Fuels Matador Firepower in Road Victory
PORTLAND – The Madrid Matadors showcased a potent offensive display, overcoming a spirited effort from the Portland Lumberjacks to secure a 130-114 victory in February 2026 season action. A relentless barrage of made baskets and stifling defense in the second half proved to be the difference, handing the Lumberjacks a tough home loss.
The game was a back-and-forth affair for much of the first half, with both teams trading blows. Portland’s Isabella Santos and Florian Richter kept the home crowd engaged with strong scoring performances. However, the Matadors began to find their rhythm, particularly from beyond the arc, with Emil Schmidt and Caleb Finch connecting on crucial triples. The Lumberjacks struggled to contain Madrid’s offensive explosion, as their normally stout defense faltered.
The momentum truly shifted in the third quarter. Caleb Finch, who finished with a game-high 20 points, ignited a Matador run with a series of aggressive drives and timely steals, recording five on the night. Catalina Reyes also contributed significantly with 19 points and 5 assists, orchestrating the Madrid offense. Despite Portland’s best efforts, including some strong playmaking from Kian Maxwell with 6 assists, they couldn’t match Madrid’s sustained offensive pressure.
“We knew they were going to come out strong, but we just stuck to our game plan,” said Matadors guard Caleb Finch post-game. “We focused on getting stops and then pushing the tempo, and it paid off.”
On the Lumberjacks’ side, while the loss stings, coach acknowledged the effort. “We had moments where we looked like ourselves, but Madrid just had an answer for everything tonight. We need to learn from this and get better.”
