DETROIT – The Detroit Dynamos showcased their defensive prowess and clutch offensive execution to secure a hard-fought 110-105 victory over the Athens Olympians in a tense World Pro League matchup on Tuesday night. Trailing for much of the second half, the Dynamos rallied in the fourth quarter, fueled by a dominant performance from Olga Zaytseva and crucial late-game plays, to spoil the Olympians’ home crowd.
The game was a defensive battle from the opening tip, with both teams struggling to find consistent offensive rhythm. The Olympians, led by a career-high 22 points from Priya Vance, clawed their way back after falling behind early in the second quarter. Vance’s aggressive drives and timely jumpers kept Athens within striking distance throughout.
However, the Dynamos’ defense, anchored by the towering presence of Zaytseva, proved to be the difference maker. Zaytseva stifled numerous Olympians’ attempts in the paint, adding 12 points, a game-high 10 rebounds, and 5 assists to her impactful defensive effort. The Dynamos’ collective 19 blocks were a testament to their defensive intensity.
A key turning point came in the final minutes when Max Walker, who finished with 16 points and 6 assists, orchestrated a decisive run. After a string of defensive stops, Walker found Samuel Peterson for back-to-back buckets that gave Detroit the lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
“We knew it was going to be a tough one,” said Dynamos coach Anya Sharma. “Athens is a great team with explosive scorers. Our defense had to be on point, and tonight, it was. Olga was incredible, but this was a total team effort.”
Despite the loss, the Olympians showed flashes of brilliance. Chloe Lee added 15 points and 4 assists, and Javier Lopez chipped in with 4 steals, disrupting Detroit’s ball movement. “We fought hard. We executed well for stretches, but a few key possessions didn’t go our way in the end,” commented Olympians’ forward Priya Vance.
